Black Sesame Coffee Rolls

This AAPI month, we’ve teamed up with Rooted Fare and Arisa (@arisas_tiny_baking_world) to bring black sesame coffee rolls into your life.

They’re sweet, nutty, and crunchy—all thanks to our Ethiopia Sidamo and Rooted Fare’s Black Sesame Crunchy Butter. You won’t be able to put them down.

Check out how make black sesame coffee rolls below.

Ingredients

Dough

110g all-purpose flour
110g bread flour
1 1/4 tsp instant yeast
25g granulated sugar
25g light brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
25g egg beaten (about half an egg)
1tsp vanilla extract
60ml milk of your choice
60g sour cream or yogurt
3 tbsp unsalted butter room temperature
1/4 cup Bean & Bean Ethiopia Sidamo coffee

Filing

5 tbsp Rooted Fare Black Sesame Crunchy Butter
4 tbsp powdered sugar

Cream Cheese Frosting

4oz cream cheese soften
2 tbsp butter soften
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract milk as necessary

How to Make Black Sesame Coffee Rolls

In the bowl of your stand mixer, add the flour (both all-purpose and bread), salt, and sugars and yeast. Whisk together to combine and set aside.

In a separate bowl, add the milk, butter, vanilla, and sour cream. Heat up and stir until butter is melted. Attach a dough hook to the mixer and pour the wet mixture into the dry. Mix on low.

Add the egg and coffee in and mix until the dough comes together. Add more flour as necessary.

Put dough out onto a floured surface and knead for a few minutes. Transfer to a large oiled bowl. Cover and allow to rise in a warm place for about an hour.

Meanwhile, make the filling. Mix black sesame butter and powdered sugar and set aside. If the mixture hardens up, add some milk before using.

After an hour of resting, roll the dough out to a rectangle that’s about 1/4 an inch thick. Spread the filling then roll the dough.

Cut the dough into 6 pieces. Place the rolls cut side up in a baking dish and allow to rest in a warm place for about an hour for a final rise.

Make the frosting while the rolls are rising. Preheat the oven to 350F.

Bake for 25-30 minutes. Once the rolls are cool, add the frosting!
